State Behavioral Scale (SBS) A Sedation Assessment Instrument for Infants and Young Children Supported on Mechanical Ventilation

چکیده
Objective: To develop and test the reliability and validity of the State Behavioral Scale for use in describing sedation/agitation levels in young intubated patients supported on mechanical ventilation. Design: In this prospective, psychometric evaluation, pairs of trained pediatric critical care nurse evaluators simultaneously and independently assessed a convenience sample of pediatric intensive care unit patients along eight state/behavioral dimensions and a numeric rating scale (NRS) of 0 (extremely sedated) to 10 (extremely agitated). The eight dimensions were derived from the sedation/agitation literature and expert opinion and included respiratory drive, response to ventilation, coughing, best response to stimulation, attentiveness to careprovider, tolerance to care, consolability, and movement after consoled, each with 3–5

متن کاملComparison of Fentanyl and Midazolam for the Sedation of Infants Under Mechanical Ventilation; A Randomized Clinical Trial
Background: Neonatal respiratory distress syndrome (NRDS), a life-threatening pulmonary disorder, involves 1% of all deliveries worldwide. Shallow breathing causes restlessness in infants, which itself affects pulmonary function; thus, sedative medications are used to preserve better pulmonary function. There are different opinions about the benefits and superiority of these dr...
متن کاملEffects of Different Doses of Fentanyl on the Sedation of Infants Under Mechanical Ventilation; A Randomized Clinical Trial
Background: Respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) is a medical emergency in infants resulting from a lack of or deficiency in surfactant, and leads to pulmonary failure. Surfactant and mechanical ventilation are among the primary treatments for helping infants with respiration. Some sedative drugs, such as benzodiazepines and opioids, are used to reduce stress and restlessness in...
متن کاملThe Efficacy of the COMFORT Scale in Assessing Optimal Sedation in Critically Ill Children Requiring Mechanical Ventilation
Sedation is often necessary to optimize care for critically ill children requiring mechanical ventilation. If too light or too deep, however, sedation can cause significant adverse reactions, making it important to assess the degree of sedation and maintain its optimal level. We evaluated the efficacy of the COMFORT scale in assessing optimal sedation in critically ill children requiring mechan...
متن کاملValidation of sedation scores in mechanically ventilated children admitted to a tertiary pediatric intensive care unit.
OBJECTIVES Sedation scores are important tools for use in pediatric intensive care units. The Comfort-Behavior scale is a valid method for the assessment of children although it is considered an extensive scale. The motor activity assessment scale is validated for an adult population. We considered it simpler then the one above and suitable for application in children. None of these scores had ...
